The Universal First Step: Hit Pause

When life gets overwhelming, always start by hitting your inner PAUSE button. Just like pausing a song or a video gives you a moment to catch up, pausing in life gives you the power to choose what happens next. Every tool in this program starts with “P” because your power begins with taking a PAUSE. When you’re facing any difficult situation, you have the power to choose how to respond:

Understanding Your Brain

Think of your brain like a streaming service:
  • Prefrontal Cortex (The Boss): Your play/pause controls, helps you think clearly and make good decisions
  • Amygdala (The Alarm): Your volume control, warns you of danger and triggers strong emotions
  • Hippocampus (The Playlist): Stores memories and helps you learn from experience
When you’re stressed or triggered:
  1. Your controls get glitchy (“Boss” gets overwhelmed)
  2. Your volume gets stuck on high (“Alarm” gets loud)
  3. Your playlist gets scrambled (“Filing Cabinet” can get messy)

Using your tools helps get your brain back in balance. Mindfulness and breathing help calm you “Alarm” so you “Boss” can think clearly again.

Daily Practice

Remember
  • You can always hit pause
  • You control when to hit play
  • All feelings are valid
  • Thoughts aren’t always facts
  • You can feel multiple things at once
  • It’s okay to need help
  • Practice makes progress, not perfection

Signs You Need a Mindful Moment
  • Racing heart
  • Tight muscles
  • Fast breathing
  • Racing thoughts
  • Strong emotions
  • Feeling overwhelmed
  • Body tension
  • Trouble focusing

When you notice these signs, think of them as notifications to use your media player controls.
