LEARNING OBJECTIVE

Understand how to apply cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques in workplace settings to improve job retention and career success

Part 1: Introduction

30 seconds

“When we’re at work, sometimes our thoughts can trip us up and make things harder than they need to be. I’m going to show you a quick way to catch those thoughts and turn them around.”

Part 2: CBT at Work

1 minute

“Our thoughts → feelings → actions are all connected. Let me share four common thought traps that can mess with your work life:

  1. When your boss gives you directions and you think: ‘They’re disrespecting me.’ Reality check: Their job is to provide direction. This thought just creates unnecessary tension.
  2. When you’re a few minutes late and get written up: ‘They’re singling me out unfairly!’ Reality check: Workplace policies apply to everyone. This thought makes it harder to accept feedback.
  3. When assigned basic tasks: ‘This work is beneath me.’ Reality check: All jobs include various tasks. This thought prevents you from showing your reliability.
  4. When feeling stuck: ‘I’ll be trapped in this job forever.’ Reality check: This is just one step in your career journey. This thought kills your motivation.”

Part 3: Quick Technique

1 minute
Introduce the 4 C’s method with their current situation:

Part 4: Closing

30 seconds

“This week, try to catch just one negative thought about work or school. When you notice it, pause and ask: ‘What’s another way to look at this?’ This small shift can make a huge difference in how you feel at work and how successful you become. What’s one workplace situation where you could try this?”
